Are you finishing school, thinking about a career change, or looking for a practical way to get ahead? A council apprenticeship or traineeship could be just the opportunity you’ve been waiting for.

Council apprenticeships and traineeships combine paid, hands-on work activities with formal study through a Registered Training Organisation. You’ll gain practical skills, real-world experience, and a nationally recognised qualification, all while earning a wage.

Why start your career at council?

Council apprenticeship and traineeships give you skills for life while you’re contributing to your community.

Here’s what makes it a great choice:

  • Earn while you learn: You’re paid from day one, which means financial independence while you train and acquire skills and knowledge.
  • Get qualified: You’ll complete a nationally recognised qualification, usually a Certificate III, that’s valued across Australia.
  • Learn by doing: Work alongside experienced team members and develop job-ready skills on the ground.
  • Room to grow: Councils often keep apprentices and trainees on after they finish training. It’s a great pathway to long-term work.
  • Supportive teams: Councils offer structure, mentoring and safe, fair workplaces.
  • Make a difference: Whether you’re fixing roads, maintaining public spaces, or supporting local services, your work directly benefits your community.

What you can do as a council apprentice or trainee

Councils offer a wide variety of apprenticeships and traineeships, especially in practical, trade-based roles and identified skills shortage job occupations. You’ll be part of a team delivering essential services that keep communities running smoothly.

Some of the most common areas include:

  • Civil construction & maintenance – working on roads, footpaths, and drainage infrastructure.
  • Horticulture & parks – maintaining parks, gardens, reserves, and sports fields.
  • Trades – training to become a qualified electrician, plumber, carpenter, or mechanic.
  • Mechanical and equipment maintenance – working on council vehicles, tools, and outdoor equipment.
  • Business administration & customer service – working in council offices and supporting functions like finance and records management.
  • Information technology – assisting with council’s IT systems and digital services.
  • Community and library services – supporting local libraries, community programs, or recreation facilities.

Who can apply?

Apprenticeships and traineeships are open to anyone aged 15 or older, not just school leavers. Whether you’re changing careers, re-entering the workforce, or still in school, you may be eligible.

There are full-time and part-time options, and school-based apprenticeships and traineeships allow students in Years 11 and 12 to start training while completing their studies.

Councils look for people who are reliable, enthusiastic, and ready to learn – no prior experience is required.

How it works

Apprenticeships usually take one to four years to complete, depending on the qualification. Traineeships are often shorter, generally completed within one to three years, but they follow the same model of paid work combined with formal training.

Like apprentices, trainees can be full-time, part-time, or even school-based while they earn their certificate.

If you’re progressing quickly in your apprenticeship or traineeship, you may be eligible for early completion through competency-based training.

Already have relevant experience? Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) could shorten your apprenticeship or traineeship by giving you credit for what you already know.

When your apprenticeship or traineeship ends, you’ll have options. Many apprentices and trainees stay on with council, pursue further study, or use their skills to launch their own business or find work with other local employers.
