Lake Macquarie City Council is seeking motivated and reliable people to join our Waste Operations team at the Awaba Waste Management Facility.
This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys practical outdoor work, operating machinery, working with people, and being part of an essential community service that helps keep Lake Macquarie clean, safe and sustainable.
Whether you already have waste industry experience or come from construction, labouring, transport, landscaping, logistics, customer service or plant operation backgrounds, we would love to hear from you!
What You’ll Be Doing
As a Waste Management Facility Operator, you’ll play an important role in the day-to-day operation of the facility. Your work may include:
- Assisting customers with waste disposal and recycling
- Directing traffic and maintaining safe vehicle movements
- Operating plant and equipment
- Weighbridge and gatehouse operations
- Sorting recyclable and reusable materials
- Maintaining site safety and cleanliness
- Working across different operational areas of the facility

LET’S HEAR ABOUT YOU
We’re looking for motivated and reliable people who enjoy hands-on outdoor work and take pride in contributing to a safe and efficient operation. You will have a strong commitment to workplace safety and the ability to remain aware of your surroundings while working around machinery, vehicles and members of the public.
You will be a confident communicator who can provide helpful and professional customer service to a wide range of people. You enjoy working as part of a team but are also capable of working independently and using initiative to complete tasks and support daily site operations.
Most importantly, you will bring a positive attitude, willingness to learn, and the flexibility to adapt across a variety of operational tasks within a fast-paced waste management environment.
You will bring:
- A current MR Driver Licence or willingness to obtain
- Basic computer skills
- Effective communication and customer service skills
- A commitment to workplace safety
- Ability to work with minimal supervision and as part of a team
- Construction Induction Card (White Card) or willingness to obtain
- Most of all you welcome any challenge with a positive work ethic and a 'can-do' attitude!
Highly regarded but not essential:
- Waste industry experience
- HR Licence
- Traffic Controller ticket
- Plant operation experience
- Skid steer competency
- Weighbridge or cash handling experience

This position provides:
- Competitive salary from $65,994 to $76,695 per year plus 12% superannuation
- Rotating weekend roster opportunities with penalty rates applicable
- Annual Enterprise Agreement pay increases apply effective July 2026
- Commencing salary set in line with skills and experience with annual reviews available to support movement through the salary range
- Adverse working conditions and travel allowance
- 38-hour working week with nine-day fortnight
