About the role

Woollahra Council has a fantastic opportunity for an experienced Senior Solicitor to join our team. This role sits within our newly created in-house Legal Services Unit which is responsible for the provision of high quality and responsive legal services across the organisation.

Reporting directly to the General Counsel, you will play a key role in providing management of legal advice on a range of Council matters including planning law, privacy, tendering, property, contract, information access, governance and environmental compliance. You will have an exceptional opportunity to develop and extend your skills appearing in the Land and Environment Court, Local Court and other Court or tribunals. You will represent Council in directions hearings and conciliation conferences and manage Barristers for contested hearings.

About you

We are seeking a qualified legal professional with experience providing complex legal advice across a broad range of law matters. Specifically, you will have litigation experience in the Land and Environment Court, the Local Court and other courts and tribunals. You will have excellent communication and customer service skills with the ability to work in a fast-pace environment. You will be a high achiever with:

  • Relevant legal qualifications and admission to the Supreme Court of NSW to practice as a Solicitor.
  • Demonstrated experience in private legal practice, in-house counsel, government lawyer or similar role providing complex legal advice across a broad range of law including planning law, privacy, tendering, property, contract, information access, governance and environmental compliance.
  • Experience in the conduct litigation in the Land and Environment Court, the Local Court and other courts and tribunals.
  • Excellent communication and conflict resolution skills supported by highly developed political awareness.
  • Demonstrated commitment to providing high level of customer experience with the ability to manage sensitive matters.
  • Well-developed analytical thinking, creative thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Current C class drivers licence.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience in advocacy in the Land and Environment Court, the Local Court and other courts and tribunals.
  • Collection and preparation of evidence for criminal prosecutions.
