East Arnhem Regional Council (EARC) is seeking an experienced Work Health and Safety Coordinator to provide organisational Work Health and Safety (WHS) support and is responsible for ensuring East Arnhem Regional Council (EARC) is compliant with all relevant legislation, regulations, codes of practice and Australian standards.
What you'll do
- Provide proactive, professional and timely WHS advice to all staff in the organisation, including strategic advice to the Executive Leadership Team.
- Build and maintain a "Safety First" culture across all communities and work locations.
- Conduct Council wide WHS inductions and deliver relevant training and Toolbox Talks to ensure staff remain competent, informed and compliant with WHS obligations.
- Work with relevant managers, supervisors, and coordinators to develop and continually update safe operating procedures, policies and other relevant safety documents in line with NT legislations, funding body requirements and best practice.
- Maintain accurate Council wide records of hazard logs, incident reports and First Aider and Fire Warden registers.
- Liaise with the Training & Development Coordinator to ensure all WHS-related workplace certifications remain current, including First Aid and Fire Warden training.
- Lead the ongoing development, review and improvement of EARC's WHS Management System.
- Provide monthly, quarterly and annual WHS reports as requested by the Executive team.
- Lead or support incident investigations, near misses, hazards, and emergency related events and ensure corrective actions are implemented, monitored and closed out in a timely manner.
- Assist with coordination of Workers Compensation and lead Council's Return to Work Program.
- Escalate non-compliance to the Line Manager and Executive Leadership Team where required.
- Actively participate in all offered training and development opportunities.
- Comply with all Workplace Health and Safety Policies and Procedures.
- Other duties as reasonably directed by the Human Resources & Industrial Relations Manager.
Emergency Preparedness & Response
- Identify, assess, and mitigate safety risks across EARC's operations, developing safety management plan and strategies including Emergency Preparedness and Response.
- Drive ongoing safe work practices and a strong safety culture by inspecting work sites in communities.
- Ensure all communities have clear, practical guidance on emergency warnings (Advice / Watch and Act / Emergency Warning).
- Oversee seasonal cyclone readiness activities, including building checks, signage, equipment preparation, communication protocols, and staffing arrangements.
- Coordinate annual emergency drills, including cyclones, shelter activation, fire and flood where applicable, and ensure outcomes are documented and actioned.
What you'll bring
- Tertiary qualification in Work Health and Safety with demonstrated experience in implementing health and safety management systems and providing advice to managers and staff on best practice WHS matters.
- Cert IV Training and Assessment.
- Strong organisational, planning and coordination skills with an ability to meet deadlines.
- Comprehensive knowledge of incident investigation techniques including investigation, analysis and evaluation.
- Innovative and strategic thinking skills with the ability to see and suggest ways to continually improve and a positive approach to change.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to engage with diverse cultural groups.
- Strong ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams.
- Proven effective time management with the ability to work autonomously.
- Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite (particularly Word, Excel, and Outlook) and an ability to learn new software.
- Must hold a current C Class Drivers Licence.
Desirable:
- Other relevant or related qualifications.
- Previous experience living and/or working in remote Australian First Nations' communities.
- Demonstrated high level of cross-cultural awareness to ensure effective participation in a multi-cultural workplace.
- Awareness of issues affecting First Nations People in Australia.
