The Colac Otway Shire Council are seeking an exceptional individual to join our Services & Operations Team as a Diesel Mechanic.

As a Diesel Mechanic you will ensure Council:

  • Maintains all Council’s plant and equipment in an efficient and cost-effective manner that ensures compliance with all relevant codes and legislation.
  • Provides an effective and efficient mechanical service involving the repair, servicing and maintenance of Council’s light fleet, plant and equipment, including heavy commercial vehicles, earthmoving and agricultural equipment, motor vehicles and minor plant such as mowers and chainsaws.

 Key responsibilities include:

  • Diagnose problems from mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic schematics.
  • In consultation with the Fleet and Workshop Administration Officer, undertake routine servicing, maintenance and repairs to all light fleet, plant and equipment as reported on the vehicle plant log sheets.
  • Repair and maintain all council light fleet, plant and equipment to meet council and industry standards, within defined time frames and in the most cost-effective manner according to established maintenance schedules.
  • Undertake scheduled preventative maintenance for all Council owned light fleet, plant & equipment and instruct drivers, plant operators and other employees on routine inspection and servicing of vehicles, plant and equipment entrusted to their care, reporting problems to the Fleet and Workshop Administration Officer.
  • Recommendations of tasks to be undertaken by external contractors to the Fleet and Workshop Administration Officer
  • Provide technical advice regarding specifications and assessments for plant purchases as required in consultation with the Fleet and Workshop Administration Officer.
  • Perform risk assessments on new and existing plant and equipment as required.
  • Ensure work performed complies with Council standards, appropriate Australian Design Rules (ADR), VicRoads regulation and manufacturer specifications.
  • Interpret equipment manuals and vehicle software to identify spare parts and liaise with the Fleet and Workshop Administration Officer for parts ordering.
  • Be available to attend after hour vehicle breakdowns and vehicle retrievals, as required.
  • Perform other duties that are within the limits of the incumbents’ skill, competence and training.

 About You:

To support your success in this role you will have:

  • Diesel Mechanic qualification with 3 years minimum trade experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in the repair, servicing and maintenance of heavy plant and equipment.
  • Demonstrated technical skills and experience of workshop operations.
  • Ability to operate effectively in a team, contributing positively to team operations and the ability to provide a consistent level of exemplary customer service.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to Occupational Health and Safety and safe work practices.
  • Certificates of competency in heavy plant operation relevant to maintenance activities.
  • Construction Induction Card/White Card essential.
  • Current manual drivers licence essential.

Salary information: $66,916.25 to $70,461.99 per annum plus superannuation.
