About the roles:
Walgett Shire Council is looking for a capable Mechanic or Senior Mechanic to join our fleet team. The position will be based at our Workshop in Walgett.
TheMechanicmaintainsthe operational readiness of Council’s plant, fleet and equipment through effective fault diagnosis,repairand servicing, in the workshop and in the field.
The role supports reliable service delivery by completing quality mechanical work safely, on time and to Council’s standards.
Depending on experience, this role starts from $65,871 p.a. and can earn up to $80,460 p.a.
TheSenior Mechanickeeps Council’s fleet, heavyplantand associated equipment safe,reliableand fit for purpose, undertaking complex mechanical maintenance and repair with an emphasis on heavy machinery and applying sound judgement in resolving faults.
The role provides day-to-day mentoring and leadership to Mechanics and Apprentice Mechanics,assiststhe Workshop Supervisor with the planning and coordination of workshop activities, and performs registration compliance inspections as an authorised AIS Examiner.
Depending on experience, this role starts from$71,432 p.a. andcan earn up to $87,152 p.a.
Both positions operate on a nine-day fortnight, providing a regular rostered day off every second fortnight. Overtime is available from time to time as operationally required.
Previous experience working in a local government environment would be useful but is not essential for the role.

The successful applicant for theMechanicposition will:
- Be a trade certified mechanic or have equal relevant experience
- Have a sound understanding of work health & safety standards
- Demonstrate experience in diagnosing and repairing plant and other mechanical equipment
- Have the ability to read and interpret plant manuals and technical information
- Have the ability to operate workshop equipment safely
- Have the ability to work alone or as part of a team
- Possess a current White Card

- Demonstrate strong leadership and mentoring qualitiesincluding coaching, task allocation and supporting competency development
- Be experienced in diagnosing and repairing plant and other mechanical equipment
- Have the ability to monitor staff compliance with work health and safety standards
- Be able to read and interpret plant and vehicle manuals,specificationsand technical information
- Either be dual trade mechanic and auto electrician or have at least 5 yearspost apprenticeship mechanicalexperience
- Hold AIS examiner authorisation
- Possess a current White Card
- Have the ability to operate workshop equipment safely
- Have the ability to work alone or as part of a team
