About the role:

Walgett Shire Council is seeking hardworking and reliable Urban Maintenance Workers in both the Water and Wastewater and Parks and Open Spaces areas of Council.These roles are suitable for someone who enjoys practical, hands-on, physical work, and being outdoors. Positions are permanent, fulltime (38 hours per week) and based in Walgett NSW.

The role ofUrban Maintenance Worker – Water and Wastewateris responsible for the operation, maintenance, and upkeep of water and wastewater infrastructure to ensure the safe and reliable delivery of essential services to the community.This role plays a key part in maintaining the functionality, compliance, and efficiency of Council’s water supply and sewerage systems and supporting public health and environmental standards. The position focuses exclusively on water and wastewater operations, with responsibilities covering routine maintenance, repairs, and assisting in the operation of Council’s water and wastewater networks.

The role ofUrban Maintenance Worker – Parks and Open Spacesmaintains and enhances public infrastructure and amenities. This includes routine inspections and maintenance of parks, gardens, sporting fields, footpaths, cemeteries, and aquatic facilities.The position requires the safe operation of tools, machinery, and vehicles, and performing general horticultural and manual labour tasks. Adherence to health, safety, and environmental regulations is essential, along with a commitment to providing quality public service and maintaining a positive image of the Council.

In addition to technical responsibilities, the roles demand strong communication and teamwork skills, the ability to follow instructions, and a proactive approach to risk management. Workers are expected to support Council’s goals through collaborative efforts, upholding confidentiality, being adaptable to evolving duties, and promoting a positive image of Council to the community and public.

Positions require avalid Class C driver’s license and a WHS Construction Induction Card.Tickets in plant operation, chemical safety, chainsaw operation and first aid will be highly regarded.

About you:

To be successful in these positions you will:

  • be motivated and hardworking with a practical background in water and wastewater or horticulture
  • be physically capable and willing to perform manual labour and work in adverse weather conditions
  • possess the skills necessary to carry out inspections, perform routine maintenance, and operate various plant and equipment safely and efficiently
  • be able to demonstrate a sound understanding of safety procedures and strong commitment to workplace health and safety and environmental standards
  • be able to follow instructions, work within timeframes and have a willingness to learn and adapt
  • be reliable, respectful, have a positive attitude, strong communication skills and willingness to contribute effectively to a team
  • understand the importance of public service and take pride in upholding the reputation of the Council and the community
