Urban Forest Project Officer

Are you passionate about trees and urban forestry? Join the City of Canning as our Urban Forest Project Officer and play a pivotal role in planning and implementing our Urban Forest Strategy that supports a healthier, cooler and more liveable city.

About the role

This is an exciting opportunity to lead and support projects that enhance our urban canopy, diversify tree species and deliver long-term environmental and community outcomes. You will collaborate with internal stakeholders, community groups, and external partners to drive the City’s Urban Forest Strategy forward.

Importantly, you’ll foster meaningful, two-way dialogue between the City of Canning and its residents to increase awareness and understanding of the benefits of urban trees, and promote participation in the growing, maintenance, and preservation of the City’s urban forest.

Reporting to the Service Lead City Greening, this is a part-time role (60.8 hours per fortnight) until May 2027 for a forward-thinking local council. If you thrive on engaging local communities and delivering projects that drive urban forestry and greening, we’d love to hear from you!

What you’ll be doing:

• Lead and deliver the City’s Urban Forest Strategy and drive our strategic canopy coverage goals
• Develop and implement a community engagement plan that increases awareness and understanding of urban forestry, and that encourage environmental stewardship
• Lead community consultations, workshops, presentations and engagement processes
• Coordinate and deliver community-led urban forest projects and initiatives such as tree planting programs, citizen science projects and education programs
• Analyse data and prepare reports on tree canopy cover, species diversity, heat mapping, and other key indicators
• Collaborate with local policymakers, advocacy groups and key stakeholders to influence and support policies that promote urban forestry and sustainable green infrastructure
• Identify and pursue grant opportunities to secure funding for urban forest projects
• Develop the capability of Parks & Environment staff to engage effectively with the community

Who we’re looking for:

You’re a passionate advocate for green spaces with a background in urban forestry, environmental science, horticulture, arboriculture, or a related field. Community orientated and a naturally skilled communicator, you’re strategic, consultative and able to deliver on plans and projects.

• Community Engagement Expertise - Able to lead and manage community consultation processes, build trust with stakeholders, and deliver on commitments
• Proven Project Management skills with ability to deliver projects within scope, time and budget
• Highly Effective Communicator - You confidently engage and facilitate across diverse audiences, as well as write professionally and concisely
• Proven research and analytical skills – able to assess and manage data, identify trends and form actionable insights
• Qualifications in Urban Forestry, Arboriculture, Environmental Management, Ecology, or a related field
• Able to provide a Satisfactory National Police Clearance and a valid ‘C’ Class driver’s license
