Do you enjoy working outdoors? Are you looking to kick start your career in Horticulture with a professional team that focuses on collaboration and development?

Woollahra Council has an exciting opportunity for two enthusiastic Horticulture Trainees to join our Open Space & Trees team for a fixed term contract until July 2025 on a full-time basis.

In this entry-level role, you will join a supportive and close knit-team of Horticulture professionals and learn about all areas of Horticulture from safe handling of plant equipment, plant identification, weeding, pruning and general Horticulture maintenance tasks. The position will require you to undertake repetitive manual tasks relating to parks and garden maintenance activities at well-known parks and open spaces including Christison Park in Vaucluse and Cooper Park in Bellevue Hill.

In addition to on-the-job training, you will be required to complete a Certificate III in Horticulture. The theoretical component of this Traineeship is delivered in a face-to-face environment and you must be able to undertake the relevant studies at the Ryde TAFE Campus, for one day per week, commencing July 2023.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will be a self-motivated individual that is passionate about developing a career in Horticulture. You will be a team-player that is willing to learn and get your hands dirty in this hands-on role. 

To be eligible for this position you must have completed a School Certificate or Higher School Certificate, and not have previously completed any tertiary qualifications in Horticulture.

Essential Criteria

  • Has not previously completed a qualification in Horticulture or related field.
  • Class C Driver’s Licence (P1 Licence also acceptable).
  • Eligible for entry into the Certificate III Horticulture under Smart & Skilled Training. For more information click here.
  • Demonstrated basic knowledge in and a genuine interest to pursue a career in Horticulture.
  • Strong willingness to learn and the ability to successfully complete a Certificate III in Horticulture on a full time basis over a period of 24 months.
  • Well-developed communication and numeracy skills.
  • Commitment to providing excellent customer service.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow instructions and work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Physically fit and able to complete allocated manual handling tasks as outlined in section Eight (8) of the Position Description.
  • Commitment to WHS and EEO policies.

  • Construction Induction Card (White Card) or willing to obtain upon commencing.
