The Opportunity
Join a growing Floodplain and Stormwater team delivering critical infrastructure that supports a safe, resilient, and sustainable Wollongong. This is a hands-on senior civil engineering role where your technical expertise and passion for finding and delivering the best solutions, directly shapes how stormwater and coastal systems are built and perform today and in the future.
Working within a very collaborative team of engineers and floodplain specialists, you will play a key role as a technical leader and mentor, supporting others while delivering your own projects end-to-end. You will work alongside internal stakeholders across, transport, infrastructure assets, planning, development, major projects and city works, as well as engaging directly with the community to respond to stormwater and flooding challenges.

This is a permanent full-time, 35 hour per week position. Salary from $106,378.28 up to $130,956.20 per annum, plus superannuation. A 3.5% Civil Liability Allowance may apply (Salary package will be assessed based on skills, experience and qualifications). An increase of 4% to the salary will be applied from 1 July 2026.
What you will be doing
- Deliver civil engineering projects end-to-end, from investigation and modelling through to detailed design, including providing technical support to on-site teams during construction
- Undertake hands-on design and drafting using industry-standard software (e.g. Civil 3D, Civil Site Design, or similar), producing high-quality calculations, drawings and specifications
- Lead technical investigations to identify solutions for drainage, flooding and coastal issues, including on-site visits and meetings to understand the issues better
- Peer review plans and provide feedback on designs and technical reports prepared by others, ensuring compliance with standards and best practice
- Mentor and support engineers, graduates and cadets, building team capability, while supporting and enhancing a strong team culture built on collaboration
- Contribute to strategic planning and long-term infrastructure improvements, including stormwater network performance, coastal resilience and flood risk mitigation
- Work closely with internal stakeholders and respond to community enquiries and issues, translating technical outcomes into clear practical advice
- Manage multiple projects and priorities, delivering outcomes on time and within budget
About you
You bring strong technical depth and practical experience in stormwater engineering, combined with a willingness to keep growing in related areas like coastal engineering and flood risk mitigation, while supporting others and contribute to better outcomes for the community.
You are confident working independently but equally enjoy collaborating with others and sharing your expertise. You're comfortable taking ownership of projects, making decisions, and navigating complex problems.
You hold a Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related discipline relevant to stormwater and coastal engineering and a current Class C Driver's Licence. You also bring:
- Solid experience in civil engineering design, ideally across both urban and greenfield environments
- Strong capability in hydraulic modelling (e.g. DRAINS, HEC‑RAS or similar)
- Proven ability to design stormwater and erosion mitigation infrastructure, including completing your own drafting using industry-standard CAD software (e.g. AutoCAD)
- Experience peer reviewing and improving technical designs, with the confidence to provide constructive feedback
- A genuine interest in mentoring and supporting other engineers, helping build capability within the team while contributing to a great and efficient working environment
- The ability to communicate complex technical information clearly to stakeholders, customers, and the community
- Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and work autonomously
