About the Role

Woollahra Council is seeking a motivated and experienced Health and Safety Advisor to join our People, Safety and Performance team on a permanent full-time basis.

This is a diverse and rewarding role that supports workplace health, safety and wellbeing across Council’s varied operations. Working closely with managers and employees, you will provide practical advice, undertake risk assessments and workplace audits, support incident investigations, and contribute to the continuous improvement of Council’s Safety Management System.

You will play a key role in embedding a positive safety culture by promoting consultation, building capability, and encouraging shared accountability for health and safety at all levels of the organisation.

The role also supports Council’s broader wellbeing agenda, including the identification and management of psychosocial hazards and workplace wellbeing risks.

Based at the Alexandria Depot, you will support the organisation across all Woollahra locations and in the field. The position reports to the Health & Safety Coordinator and works closely with the Workers Compensation Advisor.

About You

You are a collaborative and approachable WHS professional who enjoys working with people to achieve practical and sustainable safety outcomes.

You will bring demonstrated experience in health and safety risk management, compliance auditing, incident investigation and the application of WHS legislation in a complex operational environment. You will also have an understanding of contemporary approaches to workplace wellbeing, psychosocial hazards and psychological safety.

Most importantly, you will have the ability to build strong relationships, influence positive change, and support managers and employees to meet their health and safety responsibilities with confidence.

Essential criteria

  • Degree qualification in Work Health and Safety, Risk Management, with demonstrated relevant and industry experience.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of risk management methodologies and their practical application in the workplace.
  • Sound data analysis and interpretation skills.
  • Relevant and practical experience in injury management, workers compensation insurance and claims.
  • High-level oral, written, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, set priorities, develop work plans and manage projects to meet objectives and deadlines.
  • High-level analytical and investigative skills.
  • Demonstrated skills in delivering training to staff at all levels.
  • Experience in incident investigations, including leading critical incident investigations.
  • Proven ability to influence and collaborate with all levels of the workforce.
  • Current Class C driver’s licence.

 Desirable Criteria 

  • Accredited incident investigator, such as ICAM or similar.
  • Auditor qualifications, such as Exemplar Global or similar.
  • Training qualification at a minimum Certificate IV level.
  • Return to Work Coordinator certification and experience.
  • Mental Health First Aider certification.
  • Previous experience in Local Government operations is highly regarded.
