Join our dedicated Finance team as a Payroll and Accounts Payable Officer, where you’ll play a vital dual role ensuring our Council employees are paid accurately and on time, while also supporting essential accounts payable functions. This is an exciting opportunity for a finance professional who thrives on precision and enjoys variety in their day-to-day responsibilities.

In this position, you’ll be responsible for the end-to-end processing of payroll, ensuring compliance with Award and Enterprise Agreement entitlements, legislative requirements, and Council policies. You’ll also contribute to financial administration tasks that help keep our systems and services running smoothly.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Process fortnightly payroll, including interpreting and applying relevant Awards, Agreements, and employment contracts.
  • Maintain payroll masterfiles and employee records with accurate and timely updates.
  • Support the administration of superannuation, tax, and employment forms such as TFN declarations and Super Choice forms.
  • Calculate and process termination payments, back pays, and salary adjustments.
  • Ensure all leave entitlements are accurately recorded and assist with reporting on leave balances and accruals.
  • Liaise with external bodies such as Centrelink and the Child Support Agency to complete required documentation.
  • Assist in the end-of-financial-year payroll reconciliation and ensure timely reporting to the ATO.
  • Provide support for Council’s accounts payable functions, including payment processing and customer service.

What We're Looking For 

You'll be an experienced finance professional with a solid background in processing payroll, ideally within a local government or similar setting. You have a strong understanding of employment legislation, industrial Awards, and payroll systems, and you’re confident in applying these frameworks accurately. Your attention to detail is second to none, and you take pride in your ability to stay organised and maintain confidentiality at all times. With a customer-focused mindset, you communicate clearly and professionally, building positive relationships across the organisation.

Salary: Base salary $69,000 p.a. - $76,000 p.a. (commencing salary will be negotiated with the successful candidate depending on qualifications, skills and experience) 

  • Superannuation (11.5%)

Location: This position will be based at our Administration Centre in Yalawanyi Ganya at 2 Biripi Way, Taree. You may also be required to be based from other Council sites across the MidCoast Council region.

Tenure: Permanent, Full Time.
