About the opportunity

Blacktown Animal Rehoming Centre (BARC) is one of the largest and most progressive animal care facilities in New South Wales. We are committed to providing compassionate and high-quality care for lost, abandoned, and surrendered animals while actively working to find them loving forever homes.

We are looking for full-time and part-time passionate and dedicated Animal Rehoming Officers to join our dynamic team. In this role, you’ll play a key part in helping our animals transition from the shelter into the arms of new, responsible owners.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in assessing animals for adoption suitability
  • Matching potential adopters with suitable pets based on lifestyle, temperament, and needs
  • Coordinate and conduct meet-and-greet sessions and adoption interviews Provide accurate information and education to adopters on animal care
  • Maintain detailed and up-to-date animal records
  • Support promotional events and campaigns to encourage responsible pet ownership and adoptions
  • Work collaboratively with animal care, veterinary, foster carers, rescue agencies and customer service teams.

You are an accomplished animal lover with strong communication skills and a genuine desire to make a difference. You’re knowledgeable, patient, and committed to creating positive outcomes for both animals and people. 

Essential Criteria:

  • Experience working in animal welfare, veterinary services, or a related field
  • Qualifications in animal behaviour, welfare, veterinary or related field Strong understanding of animal behaviour, care, and enrichment
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills Ability to work weekends and public holidays on a rotating roster
  • Physically fit and capable of handling animals of all sizes
  • Experience in a shelter or rehoming environment
  • Familiarity with animal shelter software systems.

Qualifications and experience

Essential:

  • Formal qualifications or a demonstrated high level of experience in companion animal management or
    similar regulatory environment
  • A high level of experience handling companion animals, particularly dogs and cats
  • A sound knowledge and understanding of animal care and welfare issues
  • High level oral and written communication skills including sound negotiation and conflict resolution skills
  • Current class C driver’s licence.

Remuneration and benefits

The salary and conditions of employment are in accordance with Blacktown City Council’s Enterprise Agreement.

  • Entry level for this position starts at $1,316.09 per week
  • 38-hour working week
  • Rostered Day Off (RDO) every fortnight
  • Employee benefits such as leave entitlements (where applicable), 11.5% employer contribution payable to your nominated superannuation fund, Fitness Passport, gym membership discounts, and social clubs.
