What’s the job role?

The Senior Legal Officer plays an important advisory and legal support role to the City in regards to meeting its legal and regulatory requirements; in the formation of service, consultancy and sponsorship agreements; as well as leasing and procurement requirements. The Senior Legal Officer reports to and provides direct support to the City’s General Counsel in the provision of legal services to a variety of internal stakeholders within the City.

Key duties for the Senior Legal Officer are to support the City’s General Counsel to:

  • Provide internal legal advice on operational matters including:
    • Leasing, licences and occupancy
    • Service, Consultancy and sponsorships
    • Contracts
    • Freedom of Information and Public Interest Disclosures
    • Interpretation and application of applicable local government legislation
  • Provide strategic legal advice on potentially litigious matters or contentious issues
  • Brief legal representatives acting on behalf of the City in court proceedings where external legal support is required,
  • Represent the City at the State Administrative Tribunal
  • Undertake ongoing review of all City systems and legal documentation to ensure statutory compliance, minimisation of legal risk and the achievement of best practice in governance and administrative practice
  • Deliver training to staff on relevant and contemporary legal topics for example: impacts of legislative change, fundamental principles of contract, industrial relations, procedural fairness, and prosecutions in the local court

Who we are looking for?

The candidate for this role will be required to have a degree in law (tertiary qualification) with post admission experience with contractual drafting, preferably procurement contracts.

To be considered for this role, you must address the following selection criteria in your application; failure to do so will render your application invalid and it will not be considered.

  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of working as a legal professional, providing legal advice and support in procurement and contract management;
  • Demonstrated experience in dealing with diverse stakeholders both internal and external in negotiating agreements or contracts;
  • Possess the required qualifications.
