About the role:
The position of Senior Regulatory Compliance Officer is a key role within Council’s Planning, Environment and Economy team, with a strong focus on public health, environmental protection, animal welfare and community safety.
This is not just an animal compliance role. It is a practical and community-focused regulatory position where the right person can make a genuine difference across Walgett Shire. The role will support better outcomes for residents, improve public amenity, respond to community concerns, protect the local environment and help Council deliver fair, consistent and effective regulatory services.The position includes managing Council’s pound operations, coordinating rehoming and desexing programs, supporting responsible companion animal ownership, responding to feral animal matters, investigating complaints such as illegal dumping, noise and nuisance issues, and engaging with the community through education, prevention and collaboration with external agencies.
The position is a permanent full-time role and may be based in either Walgett or Lightning Ridge.
This is a critical role for a Council that is committed to doing things differently, valuing transparency, teamwork and delivering practical outcomes for the community.
About you:
- Understand, or are able to quickly learn and apply key legislation.
- Have strong investigative skills and can manage issues such as environmental issues, animal complaints, illegal dumping, noise and nuisance complaints.
- Able to exercise sound judgement, particularly in sensitive community and enforcement matters.
- Effective communicator who works well with the public, stakeholders and enforcement agencies.
- Understand that good regulatory compliance is built on education, consistency, fairness and practical problem solving.
- Organised, reliable and able to manage competing priorities independently or as part of a team.
- Computer literate and comfortable with reporting, documentation and using Council systems.
- Committed to building a positive workplace culture.
- Experience working in a rural or regional context will be viewed favourably.
