Changing your future

Developing your Capabilities

The type of support most commonly offered within councils includes:

Financial assistance for the successful completion of university and vocational education and training qualifications

Coaching and mentoring

Exam and study leave for approved courses of study

Training for licenses and tickets required to perform certain outdoor jobs, e.g. forklift driving, working in confined spaces

Management and leadership programs

Other technical and ‘soft skills’ training courses required for developing staff and improving performance

Spending the past 18 years in the public sector has provided me with the opportunity to work with such a diverse range of professionals and gain insights into their profession.

Moreland’s “A park close to home” initiative is one program in particular that makes me feel so proud to work at MCC. Delivering two new parks within Brunswick for the community! These sorts of programs make me proud to work in local government!

Our 189,000 employees are at the heart of everything we do.

Providing effective, tailored learning and development means we’re able to help them grow both personally and professionally.

Whether you're a graduate or an experienced worker, having opportunities to grow is essential to not only your success, but the success of the Council.

We understand that no one knows your goals and aspirations better than you, so you’ll be encouraged to take an active role in your own development.

Some councils use Capability Frameworks to guide the development of employees. The Local Government Capability Framework is an example of a common framework that describes the knowledge, skills, abilities and other attributes that people need to do their jobs well, from entry to management levels.

Entry Level Opportunities

The scale and diversity of the work we do means Local Government can offer you many different career paths.

We also provide training and development opportunities and further education.

If you add the ability to make a real difference in your community, you’ll agree there’s no better place to start your career.
