Applying For a Job With Us

Background

We are committed to ensuring that we follow fair and transparent procedures for our recruitment and selection processes.

All appointments are based on merit. Merit refers to hiring the person who is the “best fit”, with the skills, abilities and knowledge deemed most suited to the job. In order to do this, your application for the job, as well as any interviews and other testing that may occur, all forms part of the selection process.

Position Description

Please read the Position Description for the role you are applying for. You will need to refer to it when completing your application. The Position Description will provide information about:

•  Key accountabilities (or responsibilities): the specific tasks and responsibilities of the role
•  Requirements: details of the licences, qualifications, skills, and knowledge required for the role. Some of these may be essential, and others desirable
•  Capabilities: the core behaviours required for the role
•  Progression: details on how an employee can progress through the various salary levels available for the role

Our Requirements for a Job Application

1. Your most recent resume

An up-to-date summary of your relevant personal and professional skills, experience and education, including your work history. This does not have to be specific to experience you have had working in local government.

2. Covering letter

A way to introduce yourself professionally, show us why you are interested in the role, and outline the value that you could bring to it.

3. Responses to the selection criteria

When applying for a position, your application should demonstrate why you are the best person for the job, and how your skills, knowledge and experience match the selection criteria that our outlined on the position description. You should show how you meet each of the selection criteria and provide examples of your experience and qualifications. To do this it is suggested you make a separate heading for each of the criteria and under each heading describe how your skills, knowledge and experience can be used in the job. Using examples of your experience provides us with more information about your skills and knowledge.

While there is no limit to the amount of information you can or should provide, when preparing your responses you should consider the level of the position you are applying for, how important the selection criteria is for the role, and your own breadth and depth of experience in that area. If you do not have specific prior experience for a selection criteria, use past experience you have had which may be relevant.
